Hello everyone!
Today I am going to show you how to make some stunning snowflake ornaments for your Christmas Tree. This is my favorite holiday and I can't wait to share some of my ideas, so lets get started.
For this ornament you will need 51 book pages (connected by the spine) from a paper back book and some ribbon. (the book I got for free from a used book store, they were going to toss it out due to some water damage).
My $1 deal was the glittered ribbon $1.99 at Hobby Lobby (though I have also seen it at Michales) for 50% off.
Step 1: Remove cover to your paper back book. Choose 50 pages (as numbered on the pages themselves). Cut down spine with scissorsor exacto knife. I have included one extra page incase the outside page comes loose after you cut the spine, this happens a lot. After cutting 50 pages out check the front and back pages to make sure they are secure. Remove the one that is least secure.
Step 2: Cut this chunk of pages into strips. You can choose how thick you would like your ornaments I have chosen to cut these strips into 1 1/4". Depending on the hight of your book you can make two or more ornaments out of each page section cut. I can get 5 strips so 2.5 ornaments out of every 48 pages.
Step 3-A: Take one of your strips and open two pages and put a dot of Helmar 450 Quick Dry right at the binding. Gently create a loop by taking the outside of the page and tucking it into the spine binding (see second photo below).
Step 3-B: Separate the next two pages and place your dot of Helmar 450 Quick Dry at the edge of the paragraph (not at the spine binding like you did in Step 3-A). This time line up the edge of the two pages with the edge of the paragraph and FOLD the pages to form the point.
Repeat Step 3-A and B until you have 6 loops and 6 points. (If you have a page left over just remove it, you may have missed this step mentioned earlier or chose to wait till now to remove it... it works both ways). Here you can see 1/2 of the snowflake is complete. Repeat this with another strip of the pages cut in Step 2.
Step 4: Repeat Step 3-A and 3-B with another strip of the pages cut in Step 2. Lay them down so when you glue them together you will have one point glued to one loop. See Image below.
Step 5: Using Helmar 450 Quick Dry run a generous bead of glue down the spine and along the exposed side of each of the loops to be glued together with the points of the opposite 1/2.
Step 6: Let Dry
Step 7: Embellish as desired. I used Helmar's Gemstone Glue along the edges of paper on both sides of the snowflake. Letting each one dry after being glittered then repeating this on the opposite side. I always use P K Glitz Glitter! I love that stuff!
I then added a small glitter ribbon bow... (secured by Helmar 450 Quick Dry) and the book page ribbon I made using this technique I highlighted over the summer in this video (without the crumpling step).
Here were a few more photos of different color options I made for this window display.
Thanks so much for your time and I hope you enjoy this project.
