Good Morning Helmar Fans! I am supper excited that this is my first Helmar post as a new member of the Education Team and it's on my Brithday! Don't forget there is two spots open on this new team! Information found at this blog post "Meet the Helmar Education Team– and Helmar Education Team Call"
Now that my roof top shout of utter excitement is done, I have a question for you..."What does Helmar Liquid Scrap Dots, Steampunk and the Super Heroine Wonder Woman have in common?"
Give up? Why it is me of course. LOL!
There I was sitting at home the eve of my Birthday and facing a huge case of "Creators Block". So, I was thumbing through some pins on Pinterest and started diving into a style of art and fashion called Steampunk. I have admired it from afar but never found a use to create something like it... until now!
I had been toying around with being Wonder Woman for Halloween this year and let's face it...after two kids and a busy life with no time to exercies properly... I really don't have the body like Diana of Themyscira and I definitely don't have the height of an Amazon woman. So as I was drifting through these pins I realized I could combine the two!
The first project for this costume was the bulletproof bracelets. So I found some great chipboard embellishments and then thought of the perfect height, semi flexible, yet easily craftable item to us as the base bracelet... a toilet paper roll! Here is how I did it.
Step #1 - Paint a layer of Helmar Acid Free Glue all over the outside of the toilet paper roll. Let dry completely. Repeat several times, this gives a smooth surface to paint instead of the rough cardboard. I choose Helmar Acid Free Glue because it provide a smooth, flexible hold when dry.
Step #2 - Cut the toilet paper roll with one cut from one open end to the other. Round corners with scissors.
Step #3 - Glue rope or trim around edges about 1/4" in. Adhere it with Helmar 450 Quick Dry. (seen on left in the photo below) Let dry completely.
Step #4 - Cover one more layer of Helmar Acid Free Glue this time covering the rope as well. Let dry completely.
Step #5 - While they are drying from step #5, take chipboard cogs and clock shapes and paint them with Helmar Gemstone Glue. Let it try just until it has turned clear and then burnish gold foil over the shapes.
Step #6 - Ink your stars red like Wonder Woman has and then brush a stamp (I chose a Tim Holtz stamp of wings like the gold ones on the chest of her uniform) with Helmar Gemstone Glue and stamp the stars with each wing. Clean stamp right away! Repeat the foil part of step #6 on these stars.
Step #7 - Repeat the foil part of step #6 on these stars.
Step #8 - Glue Robin's Nest Dew Drops onto the bracelets to resemble rivets from the Steampunk style. Let dry completely.
Step #9 - Spraypaint with a black mat paint, let dry completely. Then spray it with a gold and before it drys scratch the surface a little bit to show some battle damage. Let dry completely.
Step #10 - Cover the Stars with a layer of Helmar Acid Free to get that shiny surface and to seal the foiling.
Step #11 - Use your Crop-a-dile or 1/8" whole punch to create the holes to lace up the back of these.
Step #12 - Glue on all the cogs and clocks using Helmar 450 Quick Dry.
Step #13 - Using Helmar's Liquid Scrap Dots apply a generous amount on the back of the star. Each point and the center should have a heaping amount applied. Now put it in place on the bracer gently pushing down but allowing it to be raised about 3/8" above the cogs and clock. Let Dry!
TIP: When using Helmar's Liquid Scrap Dots make sure it is the last thing you do on your project befor letting it sit over night to dry.
Now I have the start to my Halloween costume and I am very excited to continue working on unique pieces of it.
Thanks so much for your time today. Happy Birthday to me... I got my creative juices back just in time to bring in my 34th year crafting away. Be kind and leave me a comment below. What did you think of this project? Do you make your own or your kid's Halloween costumes? Have you started yet?
