Shadow Box of Service

Greetings and salutations! Jennifer here, with a Veterans Day shadow box projects that shows Helmar Zap Dots in their best light: unseen!

I love making shadow boxes, but it can be tough to hide the glare of white foam mounting tape against the standard black velvet background in most shadow boxes. Enter Helmar Black Zap Dots: they virtually disappear between the layers, even when doubled, leaving only your handiwork behind.

I created this particular shadowbox to commorate my friend's Air Force service. I used the Helmar Quick-Fix Adhesive Runner to double  mat her photos and got an assist from Helmar Fabric Glue to layer my red, white, and blue ribbons into a single piece. That ribbon was gathered into bunting with metallic star brads. 

The 1/4" Zap Dots were perfect to mount three of the brads (trimmed of their arms) above the photos. A chain-fringed element that mimics the stripes on my friend's dress uniform was the perfect accent piece tp finish off the decorations, also mounted with ZapDots.

This shadow box is a small thank-you to offer a friend and former service-member, but a thank-you nonetheless.

Melbourne Cup Day Table Decoration

For those of you who live in Australia you no doubt know what Melbourne Cup Day is all about, for those who do not, it is the horse race that stops a nation.

For a lot of people they do not get the chance to go to the race itself or any of the organised events around the country and often find themselves at home or in the office celebrating with their friends and collegues. This simple table decoration should add a little festive flair for you.

What you will need:

Thick foam, glitter to match the foam, Helmar Foam Glue, scissors and cutting knife and a printout or drawing of a cup/trophy.

Firstly cut out your image and trace around it on to the foam, being sure you can see the trace line.

Once you have done this, carefully cup the small holes for the handles, you should use a craft knife or a small sharp pointy pair of scissors.

Cut around the outside of the cup with your regular scissors and tidy up any edges with your smaller scissors. At the base of the cup cut out a small wedge and then create a stand by cutting a piece of foam in an arch shape to slot into it. The height of the stand needs to be 1mm less than the length of the wedge you cut out.

Now apply Helmar Foam Glue to one side of the shapes.

Spread out evenly with your finger or a paint brush and then pour on the glitter. It's best to do this over a bowl/container so that you can catch all the glitter spills and return it to the jar once you have finished. Allow the glue to dry and then repeat on the other side.

All you have to do now is insert the little stand into the wedge, walk around your home and gather up anything that resembles a horse or is horse like and group them together in the middle of your table. For some unknown reason my daughter happens to have a brass horse in her bedroom which on this particular day is a good thing!! haha I draped a little red ribbon around it's neck and attached it with a brad, placed a couple of red and white flowers on a piece of green fabric and added my little Melbourne Cup.

Nb: If you do not have any thick foam available, you can make this using thick packaging cardboard and Helmar Craft and Hobby Glue.
