Greetings, card lovers! Jennifer here, with a Valentine's Day card absolutely perfect for the animal lover in your life.
For this card I dug up some line art/digital stamps I created a few years back for my central image. If you've never tried running fabric through your inkjet printer, you're in for a treat how well it works! Printing your design on fabric instead of paper adds fabulous texture to your creation.
To make this card you'll need:
- Digital stamp or clip art
- Linen or other even-weave fabric
- Fabric Markers
- Corrugated Paper
- Card Stock
- Helmar Fabric Glue
- Helmar Quickfix Adhesive Runner
- Wide Burlap Ribbon
- Decorated buttons or beads
- Miscellaneous: freezer paper, iron, inkjet printer, scissors, straight edge
In order to run fabric through your printer, you need to stabilize it. So start by attaching the shiny side of your freezer paper to the back of your fabric with an iron. Trim the paper to whatever size your printer takes and load it into the printer as normal. Print your digital stamp or clipart, leaving a wide margin around each image to allow for trimming and fraying, later.
Another benefit to the freezer paper stabilizer is that it makes it a lot easier to color with fabric markers. But once you've finished, peel away the freezer paper and gently pull the threads around the perimeter to fray the edges slightly.
Trim strips of the corrugated paper at least as tall as your printed image. Attach two of the strips to the back of the fabric, along the sides, with Helmar Fabric Glue.
Overlap two more strips of corrugated paper to make an L and then attach to the top of the fabric with more Helmar Fabric Glue, creating your doghouse. Attach it all to a background piece of open weave, wide burlap ribbon with still more Helmar Fabric Glue.
Prepare your card base by attaching a strip of contrasting card stock to your folded card with Helmar Quickfix Adhesive Runner. The contrasting card stock needs to be wider than your "dog house" but not wider than the burlap.
Write your message on a narrow strip of fabric that also got the frayed treatment. Tuck in the corner edges on an angle, securing with Helmar Fabric Glue, to give it a the look of a banner.
Embellish the card front with themed buttons or beads, attaching them with the Helmar Fabric Glue, before adhering the decoration to the card front. A card like this is sure to get you out of the doghouse with your special someone!
