Magazine Mixed Media - Lydia

Hello Helmar friends, Lydia back to share another project with my trusty Helmar adhesives. This project I had some fun with as I don't normally get a little messy with mixed media. This project also features the use of magazines which was fun.  I love how this turned out with the colour and the different products I got to use.

What I used for this project:

• Helmar Decoupage and Craft Paste
• Helmar Tacky Glue
• Helmar Fabric Stiffener and Draping Liquid

I also use:

• an A3 piece of art paper
• Magazine ripping's
• Gesso
• Sprays
• Charcoal/ Pens
  

First of all I used Gesso to do a thin layer on the A3 piece of paper before adding some water colour. I picked these colours to match the pieces of magazine that I am using for this project.
 

Once the watercolour had tried I used the Helmar Decoupage and Craft Paste to adhere magazine pieces that were ripped.

I did organise where I wanted the magazine pieces to be placed before I adhered them.

Once the Helmar Decoupage and Craft Paste had dried I used some KaiserCraft sprays to add some splatters to the background.

 

Now I wanted to add a fun element to this project. So I used Helmar Tacky Craft Glue to adhere a crocheted doily. I didn't want this doily to be soft so I painted in some of the Helmar Fabric Stiffener and Draping Liquid in which once is dry will harden the flexibility of the thread used in the doily.

 And lastly to add a bit of detail and a title I just used some black markers I had. 

And here is my finished project.

As I mentioned at the start I really like how this project came together using magazine pieces but also because I often don't get to explore my mixed media side.

Planner layout by Sarah Rosse

Hello crafty friends! Sarah here with something a little different for you today. One of my favorite things to do at the moment is create planner layouts. I am keeping this planner to not only have some fun creative time, but to keep track of when my design team projects are due. 

For this project you will need the following materials;

Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive

Helmar Professional Acid Free glue

Blank planner page - for this project I have used the Basic Planner A5 size from Scrapper's Delights

Sequins or embellishments of your choice

Brusho Crystal Colours (for the background)

Stamps - I have used the Echo Park Paper Co Through the Year stamp set and Tim Holtz Crazy Dogs stamp set

Black ink (I used a Misti to assist in my stamping also)

Markers for colouring - I have used Touch Five markers to colour my stamped images

 

Here is what the planner page looks like once printed. I am using an A5 page and it fits nicely inside of a planner binder that I used for last year.

I then applied the Brusho Crystal Colours to the background and left it to dry.  I just love this medium - google 'Brusho' to find out more, but the colours are just so vibrant and happy! Next I stamped the days and dates. You really could position these anyway you like.  I added in the writing for the Design Team projects for that week. I also like to list the tasks I need to complete so I can check them off as I go.

I like to include a photo of both my boys each week for an additional personal touch.  Colour up your stamped images and adhere to the planner in what ever position you choose.  I just love these Crazy Dog stamps by Tin Holtz!

  

Next I adhered some sequins to the layout to finish it off.

Tissue paper background

Hi Everyone.  Its Bridget here, and today I would love to share with you a technique I like to use to get more texture on your scrapbooking  page.

 

Here is a page I created using the crumpled tissue technique.

 

What you will need:

Tissue paper

White cardtock

Helmar Craft and Hobby PVA Glue

Helmar Acid Free Glue

Helmar Gemstome Glue

Texture paste

stamps

embellisments

watercolour

 

The first thing I like to do is stamp the white card stock randomly.

Time to scrunch up that tissue paper.

Then cover the page in Helmar craft and hobby glue.

Now for the fun part, lay your tissue paper on the card stock.  Pull and form the paper until you are happy with the texture. Do not flattened it too much you want lots of interesting folds and lines. Then set aside to dry.

I like to add more texture to this, so with a couple of circle stencils I added some texture paste. Now to really make those folds and creases stand out I do some misting with a stencil.

and add watercolor.

Then it was time to add my photo.  I like to use Helmar Acid free glue to protect my photos.

and attach my embellishments using  Helmar 450 quick dry adhesive.

and lastly I find Helmar gemstone glue great for adding a few sequins.

Mixed Media Collage Portrait by Tamiko

Hey folks!  I have been doing a lot of faces lately in my art journal.  I felt as though I had a milestone moment when I decided to move some of those faces to canvas! The thing I love most about mixed media is that not only the plethora of supplies you can use without rules, but also the plain idea of creating one part.. walking away.. and coming back later to add something or finish with a whole nother idea or vision for the piece. Let's check the collaged background I've added to a previously painted face.

       

 

Supplies used:

Helmar Decoupage and Craft Paste

Helmar Crystal Kote Fixative

a brush

water

mixing dish

painted papers

DMC Pitt Pens

DMC Gelatos

 

I mixed a little decoupage paste and water, to create a thinner adhesive.

 

Then painted the canvas with the mixture.

 

 

Placed the small bits of painted papers on the wet substrate.

 

 

 Once all collage was done. I went over the area with the decoupage paste mixture once more, to make sure there were no raised  paper edges.  Let it dry completely or use a heat tool to expedite the process. 

 

 After being completely dry, I sprayed the Helmar Workable Fixative lightly a few times on the canvas.  I am not quite sure, but I may add more line work later.  

 

 

After more drying time of an hour or so.. I completed the canvas with a little line work and gelatos. Check out one other canvas I did  The only difference with the male canvas is the back ground was created before the portrait was added.

 

 

I enjoyed creating these mixed media canvases!! Any small investment in good adhesive, should ALWAYS start with Helmar.!!

My layout today has our daughter Daisy and I, taken 18 years ago. Seems like yesterday!
I've created this layout with one of my very favourite products by Helmar.
 Its Helmar's Tacky Craft Glue; so reliable and a good all rounder.

Here's what I used

Helmar Tacky Craft Glue
 Kaisercraft white cardstock
Crate Paper Shine 6x6 paper pad

I started by using the stencil and texture paste diagonally from right to left.
Then added a few splashes of different coloured ink.
Next I glued down the chipboard circle.

Then the foiled cardstock

Next I sewed around a square of the patterned paper and glued my photograph onto it.

Then I started adding embellishments

This glue is brilliant, all I needed to complete this layout. My finishing touches were gluing down sequins
and drawing a border free hand with a yellow ink pen.

Gift Card Holders

Hello! Susan here again to share with you a quick and easy card for your graduate or for an end-of-the-year teacher gift. These were so easy to whip up and are the perfect token of appreciation! First, let’s gather our supplies.

I grabbed some wood veneers, some paper scraps, metallic cord, and of course, my favorite adhesives! For this project I used my Helmar Scrap Dots, 450 Quick Dry, and Premium Craft Glue. I’ll explain why I chose each glue as we go along. I also had my gift cards and I asked my local store if I could purchase a couple of extra hot drink sleeves. They were kind enough to give them free of charge! Fantastic!

I used 450 quick dry along the inside bottom edge of the hot sleeve to make it into a pocket. It wanted it to stay open, so using the Quick Dry Adhesive let me get it sealed very fast, so I wasn’t waiting on it to dry to continue my project. Then it was just assembling my card design!

Here’s a tip for you – when using the Premium Craft Glue to adhere paper to paper, you have a little wiggle time to move the paper into perfect alignment. Great if you have trouble like me to lay down the paper perfectly the first time! I placed my patterned papers down and was able to adjust them quickly until they were in the position that I needed.

I used Scrap Dots to adhere the sleeve to the card front to give it some extra  dimension for visual interest. It does take a gentle touch so my first card is slightly less dimensional than the second one I made. This was my first time using this product, and I was SO pleased with how well it worked and how fast it dried! It only took a few minutes to set up enough that I could manipulate the card and continue adding embellishments! (the instructions say it dries to the touch in 10 minutes, and cures in 48 hours. Be sure it’s cured before tucking these cards into an envelope.)

I used the 450 Quick Dry again to adhere the wood veneers as a finishing touch. Then I tucked the cards in to the cup sleeve pockets and they’re ready to have a personalized message written inside and off to the recipient! This design is so easy to adapt to any gift card or gift need. You can always make a simple paper pocket , use birthday themed papers and then you have a custom gift card holder perfect for your birthday girl or boy! I hope this inspires you to add your own creative touch next time you’re giving a gift card to a friend or loved one. Until next time- have fun being creative!

Recycled Denim Art Journal.

 Hi all Vicki-Ann here for the Helmar Creative Team. Today I have a recycled denim journal cover using up some more of my old denim jeans. 

For today's project you will need.

• Helmar Fabric Glue
• Helmar Tacky Craft Glue
• Old jeans or denim fabric
• Card stock
• Cardboard/cereal box
• Length of elastic
• Scissors
• Ruler 

I cut the denim fabric into pieces and sewed the leg of the jeans and the back pocket together to make one long length. I then ironed it flat so you get a nice seam. 

 

 

Then figure out how big you want your journal to be. Mine ended up being about 9 inch high x 6 inch wide. I wanted to keep the pocket on the front so that I could store pens in it.

 

Using the Helmar Fabric Glue spread it over the cardboard and press it on to the fabric. Smoothing it as you go. My denim is a bit stretchy so this was tricky but if you glue it bit by bit you will get it to work.

 

 

I cut the corners on the inside folding it over so it makes it neat and then put the  Helmar Fabric Glue on the fabric edges. Fold over onto the cardboard on the inside. Working the corners in neatly as you go.

 

 

 

I then grabbed some card stock and cut it to size. Using the Helmar Tacky Craft Glue I glued it to the inside, to cover up the edges of the fabric and make it neat. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I threaded some of my paper beads on to some hat elastic and tied it in a knot so it fit around my journal. Then I can just thread my letter journals onto the elastic. I will be able to put a few in this by adding more elastics. I will make a note book and a few blank journals for the inside so I have a all in one journal to suit me. 

 

 

 

 

Little Lady | Krisy Podolak

Hi Helmar Faithfuls.

Today I am sharing a project that had me revisiting techniques I learned in High School.  I still have the sculpture I made sitting on my window sill in my dining room.  My last one wasn't quite finished in the same way as this one but I know there is no chance of my children trying to unwrap this one.  Curious yet? Here she is.

So, my lady is made using foil, tape and calico.  Don't believe me?  I'll take you through it.

Here's what you will need:

• Tin foil (it's known as al foil here in Australia) You know the tin wrap
• masking tape
• Helmar Fabric stiffiner & Draping Fluid
• strips of Canvas or plain material
• Paints

First you have to sculpt your person.  So using the tin foil create some balls that will be come a body and head.  Then roll up some foil that will become the arms and legs.  You can make this as big or small as you like.  

Once you are happy with your parts, tape them together using the masking tape.  You can use more tin foil to build up areas such as breast and bottom, feet and hands.  I am just a bit obsessed with pregnant bellies at the moment so I added once of those to mine. All you need to do is just wrap more foil around or use tape to build up the required areas.  You can see this in the photo below.

These are the bones of your sculpture made.  All you need to to is add some "Skin".  This is where the Helmar Fabric Stiffener & Drapping fluid comes into play.  

Cut your material into thin strips.  Pour some Draping fluid into a container. Working one strip at a time dipping the fabric into the liquid, scrape off any excess using your fingers and start wrapping your person.  Make sure you overlap the layers.  Just use your fingers to smooth off the fabric and remove any excess fluid.  This is a messy process.  Be warned.  Make sure you have more than enough strips cut at the beginning of the process.

One strip at a time mummify your person.  When you are happy and the whole thing is wrapped set aside to dry.  The instructions on the draping fluid say 24 hours but I wanted to make sure my lady was extra dry so I left her for a few days.  Once it is dry it is completely solid. Note: I didn't completely smooth out my fabric.  I wanted to add some texture.

I then painted my whole lady in white acrylic paint to give a nice base before painting on all the details.

This is a fairly easy project to do.  The hardest part is waiting for things to dry.  Once my lady was painted I added her to a frame from my stash and she is ready to hang in my craft room.

Mothers Day Gift - Photo Keepsake by Rachel Lowe:

We had some family photos professionally taken in January before my parents emigrated to another country and therefore they are extra special. I decided for Mothers Day to make my mother a gift that she could have in her home and it would be visible instead of the photos being hidden in an album.

 

This frame was inexpensive and just perfect for what I wanted.

Firstly I removed the glass as I wanted to not just put photos in but decorate and this would add height therefore the glass would prevent me doing this.

I chose a pretty rose floral paper and co ordinating embellishments from my stash.

I used Helmar 450  quick dry glue to attach my chosen papers cut at 6x4 inch and my photo.

I then set about decorating each 6x4 inch frame.

I used Helmar liquid scrap dots to add height to certain elements such as the roses, tea pot and cup.

I used the Helmar PVA glue to attach the wood veneer pieces.

 

I lastly added my photo of my mother and I. I added a rose to the outer of the frame and a paper heart to the top right of the photo.

 

This is simple to create and budget friendly, however is a beautiful gift made from the heart.

Mothers Day Card - with Lisa

Hi there. Lisa here with you today sharing a card I have created for Mothers Day.

Here is a look at the completed card. I cut out a card base using a cut file on my Silhouette Cameo. It's the shape of a watering can filled with flowers. It's quite cute.

Here are the adhesives I used. I mostly used Helmar Craft Glue for the construction & used the Helmar Glue Dots to raise up some of the flowers & the sentiment.

Here I am using the Craft Glue to adhere the pieces together.

Here is a close up of the floral arrangement. As you can see; to add interest I have used different shapes, sizes & materials.

I applied a decent amount of Helmar Scrap Dots to the back of the sentiment, so It will sit up nicely as a feature.
