Hi Helmar fans, Raelene with you Today.
I recently started doing some sewing classes with a fantastic teacher who lets students pick their own projects, so when I said I wanted to make a custom upcycled bag for all the stuff I take to the skate rink that doesn't fit into E's skate bag my awesome teacher was enthusiastic in helping me figure out what I needed from my bag and how to make it.
As I worked on my handles I realised I needed to using Helmar Fabric Stiffener & Draping Glue could help with making the base of my bag firmer so loading my cushion in will hopefully be a little easier.
Make sure you line your surface with some wax paper or baking paper.
As the Helmar Fabric Stiffener & Draping Glue leaves a sheen on the fabric I decided that instead of soaking my base in it I would paint it on the inside.
I needed 2 helpers for this and I couldn't get a photo while painting it as all hands were needed.
I poured a decent amount into some random plastic packaging I had and painted the inside of my bag with a old brush, giving it a generous coating.
A tip from the Helmar team helped me figure out how I was going to leave this overnight. I placed 4 2lt Bulla Icecream tubs inside and then put some heavy books on top to help with flattening out my base. I left it for 24 hours to dry.
I haven't been able to get a photo that shows how the base is stiff, it just doesn't show but here is a pick of my bag sitting on the carpeted stepped seating at the rink, you can kind of tell that the upper section is floppy but the base has form.
Here is a pick of me wearing it.
I like the amount of stiffness the Helmar Fabric Stiffener & Draping Glue has given my base, it's perfect for my needs.
